Desensitization Techniques

The aim of immunotherapy is to desensitize you to the substances that trigger your allergy. The technique was introduced at the starting of the 20th century and works approximately in the same way as a vaccine. You are given a minute number of an offending substance and over a duration of time you gently build up a resistance to it, so that after any treatments you are not allergic to it any more.

Also known as hypo sensitization, incremental desensitization gently builds up your tolerance to a singular allergen by using progressively higher concentrations until a level is reached that will give you protection but will no longer cause any allergic symptoms. The technique is used for hay fever and other seasonal allergies and anaphylaxis caused by insect stings.

Bee Stings Remedies

It can also be used for people who suffer exact animal sensitivities. Extracts made from insect venom can give 98 percent protection from wasp stings and 80 percent from bee stings. However, incremental desensitization is not convenient for skin allergies or allergic rhinitis and it has a low success rate with food allergies and intolerance. It is vital that this technique is monitored by your doctor.

Desensitization Techniques

In this treatment low doses of an allergen are administered daily or every other day by an injection just under the skin or by drops placed under the tongue. It is favorite in the Usa and Australia but, apart from a few of clinics in the United Kingdom, the technique is not common elsewhere. The Miller technique, which is named after Dr Joe Miller in the Usa, is exactly the same as neutralization.
